SGR Trains (Madaraka Express and SGR Intercounty)

There are four trains that run daily between Nairobi and Mombasa – largest cities in Kenya. The Afternoon trains are called Madaraka Express while the Morning Trains are called Intercounty trains. The later stops at intermediate stations along the Railway lines while the former travels straight from Nairobi Terminus to Mombasa Terminus.

How to book SGR Train Tickets With Mpesa or Cash

1. Ask your friends or hotel in Nairobi to do it for you

2. Visit Kenya Railways Website and Complete the Train booking with Mpesa

3. Visit the train station a few days (Ticketing open 30 days in advance) prior to your trip and buy the tickets with cash

3. Ask an agent to buy the tickets for you at a fee

The SGR Train Station Locations and Accessibility

The SGR Nairobi Terminus is located in Syokimau and it’s also referred to as SGR Syokimau Station. From the Nairobi CBD, the terminus is accessible by matatus and buses or commuter trains at the Old Nairobi Railway Station and Bus Stop. One can also access the station via a Taxi (Shared – Uber, Taxify, & Local taxis).

The SGR Mombasa Terminus is located in Miritini and it’s also referred to as SGR Miritini Station. From the Mombasa CBD, the terminus is accessible by matatus and buses located at the Old Mombasa Railway Station. Taxis (Both local and shared) are available in the city.

SGR Check-in Time

It is highly advisable that travelers arrive at the station at about 1.5 hrs before the train departures time. The security checks take quite some time and it’s always good to be on the safe side.
